Move over the iPhone and the Galaxy; budget is the new premium!

Move over the iPhone and the Galaxy; budget is the new premium!

If you go back a few years, there was a huge gap between devices such as the Apple iPhone or the Samsung Galaxy range (what was considered ‘premium’) and the rest of the lot that was ‘budget’. There were a few mid rangers floating somewhere in between, but they didn’t really offer anything close to a premium device.
It was simple maths, if you have lots of money to splurge, then there are premium devices such as Apple’s iPhone, Samsung’s Note and some S range handsets. Likewise, flagships from Sony, LG and HTC also add up to the list. Other devices, even mid range products didn’t match up to what premium had on offer, so let’s not even consider the uber-budget devices.
Over the years, this has changed. If you remember, Micromax was one of the first companies in India that decided to stand against Samsung with its canvas series offering superior specs at affordable prices. It catered to ‘value for money’ Indian audiences at the right level, by bringing to you everything you ever desired but couldn’t afford.

This trend has sort of caught up over the years, especially after the onslaught of Chinese vendors in the Indian market such as Xiaomi, Gionee, Oppo, OnePlus and so on. These companies have been offering the best at a much lower price. Motorola, a seasoned OEM, was also among the first to hit the right chords with its Moto series and help establish price brackets like sub-Rs 7k and sub-Rs 12k. Today, we have companies fighting out to bring the best device at these price points.
Oneplus 2
Bigger brands are known to launch their flagships each year. The best from the company. However, as the trend shows, most of these flagships quickly come down the slippery slope to enter the mid-range market. Earlier this year, OnePlus introduced what it called the ‘2016 flagship killer’, and the marketing campaign aimed at these premium products. For instance, the OnePlus 2 offers a nifty specs sheet including a 5.5-inch 1080p display and Snapdragon 810 processor starting at Rs 23,000. Snapdragon 810 is a high-end processor offering elevated performance found in devices priced over Rs 40,000. And this is one of the reasons, why companies like Xiaomi and OnePlus are performing very well. This has also helped in shedding the stereotype image of the Chinese products.
In the last couple of years, the number of such affordable devices has increased. Even Apple is said to be working on an iPhone 6c that will be a watered down variant of its 6s model. In the past, we saw the company attempt the same with iPhone 5c, but failed to attract audiences. However, given the market trend, the Cupertino Company knows how essential it is have a presence in the low to mid-range.
Today, a premium device will not dig a hole in your pocket, unless you are brand conscious. Today, you will find premium features like full HD display, high-res camera and even fingerprint scanners in devices priced under Rs 30000. All will eventually lead to plateauing of premium devices as most companies will start focussing to churn out superior specs at affordable prices.

The iPad Pro has an optional Smart Keyboard cover

Apple took the wraps off a new keyboard accessory for the newly-announced iPad Pro today, integrating into a cover that's a little like the soft keyboards Microsoft has offered for its Surface tablets. The Smart Keyboard uses key domes that Apple first developed for the new MacBook announced earlier this year and connects to the iPad Pro using a new connector type — the Smart Connector — which means that it's not connecting over Bluetooth. The entire keyboard is cloth, which won't likely be as easy to use as a traditional keyboard — even the limited-travel one on the MacBook — but it's still a step up from a virtual one. (Interestingly, this isn't the first keyboard accessory Apple has made for the iPad: the company made a "Keyboard Dock" with a 30-pin connector, but it wasn't particularly portable — and it certainly didn't double as a cover.)
The Smart Keyboard won't be bundled with the iPad Pro, but will be made available as an optional add-on like like the Smart Covers that Apple has long offered for iPads.

Microsoft Spiffs Up Skype Mobile Apps

Microsoft Spiffs Up Skype Mobile Apps

Skype faces stiff competition across the board. Facebook terminated its Skype partnership this spring, when it added free video calling to its Messenger app. Other competitors for instant messaging include WhatsApp, QQ Mobile, WeChat and Viber. WhatsApp was the most popular global messenger app in August, with 800 million monthly active users, according to Statista. Messenger came in second.

Microsoft last week rolled out versions of Skype 6.0 for iOS and Android. The company redesigned the applications to be more natural and intuitive, and it added new features.
Skype 6.0 for Android now has a floating action button, which makes it easy to start a new conversation. Its navigation is more streamlined, too. It's compatible with Android 4.0.3 or later.

The new version for iOS incorporates swipe gestures and makes it easier to share photos, Web links, emoticons and users' locations while on a voice or video call, as well as to start a group chat or a group voice call on the iPad. It runs on iOS 7 or later.

Both Skype for Android and Skype for iOS have enhanced search to simplify finding messages and contacts.

Going With Nadella's Mobile Vision

Microsoft apparently focused on uniformity when redesigning the app for iOS and Android.
"Typically, Microsoft designs the UI to match the OS, but in looking at the two versions, both are very similar to the one I have on my Windows phone, suggesting Microsoft focused at least as much on keeping them largely consistent across mobile devices," remarked Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group.
"You should be able to move to any version of Skype on any device and pick it up pretty quickly as a result," he told TechNewsWorld.
That's in keeping with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's vision of competing in a mobile-connected world.
Microsoft didn't have to do too much to customize Skype for Android and iOS as the two operating systems are "actually pretty close to each other in apps across the board," Enderle said. The differences "have to do with interfacing with both platforms' stores, but Skype doesn't need to do that."

Skype's Position in the Market

Skype faces stiff competition across the board. Facebook reportedly terminated its partnership with Skype this spring, when the social network added free video calling to its Messenger app.
Other competitors for instant messaging include WhatsApp, QQ Mobile, WeChat and Viber.
WhatsApp was the most popular global messenger app in August, with 800 million monthly active users, according to Statista. Facebook Messenger was next with 700 million. QQ Mobile came in third with 603 million, and WeChat was close on its heels with 600 million. Skype ranked fifth with 300 million, and Viber was sixth with 249 million.
WhatsApp offers free voice calling on iOS, Android and Windows Phone; QQ Mobile offers video calling; WeChat offers audio and video calling; and Viber offers video calling on Android over smartphones with an ARMv7 processor.
While Skype users can call each other for free, they have to pay to connect with nonusers on mobile phones and landlines.
However, free voice and video calling apps may have hidden charges. Unless the users are on WiFi networks, they guzzle data.
WhatsApp sucks down 800 KB a minute for calls made on 4G/LTE networks, AndroidPit found. Its verdict: Go with WiFi.

Who Will Use Skype?

Skype is not likely to make much headway in the market because "it depends on the demographics," said Susan Schreiner, an analyst at C4 Trends.
Skype is "still a major brand internationally, but kids and millennials are all looking for free," she told TechNewsWorld. "It's more likely that Skype will be used for business."
Skype's "pretty easy to use, and cuts across platforms, including PCs -- but at the moment, few people use it heavily," Enderle said.
Expect Microsoft to continue working on Skype, though, he suggested. "It's one of their key cross-platform products which can be used to pull people into the Microsoft family of products, and it's their key communications offering.

Verizon Floors the 5G Accelerator

Verizon Floors the 5G Accelerator

Verizon may feel "a tremendous sense of urgency" to build out a 5G network, but don't start holding your breath yet -- widespread 5G is likely more than a decade out. There may be motives at work other than its desire to be a technology leader, noted Pund-IT's Charles King. "Verizon needs ways to differentiate itself from more aggressive wireless competitors. This is primarily a publicity stunt."

Verizon on Tuesday announced that it was accelerating its efforts to boost wireless connections to 50 times faster than current offerings.

The company has begun putting the components in place to enable it to begin field testing a new, speedier wireless technology, known as "5G," next year.
"5G is no longer a dream of the distant future," said Roger Gurnani, chief information and technology architect for Verizon. "We feel a tremendous sense of urgency to push forward on 5G and mobilize the ecosystem by collaborating with industry leaders and developers to usher in a new generation of innovation."

Keeping Industry Vibrant

Verizon and its partners -- Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm and Samsung -- last month kicked off a 5G forum and began forming teams to accelerate development of the next-generation mobile technology.
The 5G Technology Forum includes a group of venture capitalists focused on a variety of emerging technologies.
Verizon's move to accelerate 5G development in the United States will keep the nation competitive in the global communication market, said Rima Qureshi, chief strategy officer for Ericsson.
"A lot of development and requirements for 5G networks have so far come from Asian operators," she said. "It's exciting to see a U.S. company accelerate the rate of innovation and introduce new partners."

Innovation as SOP

Verizon expects its 5G strategy to follow the road map it used for developing its 4G LTE technology. It brought that tech to market two years after testing began. LTE was available to 98 percent of the U.S. population within five years of its rollout.
"If you're looking at the normal evolution of networks, you're looking at 2020," Verizon spokesperson David Samberg told TechNewsWorld. "What we're trying to do is accelerate that time frame so it happens sooner than that."
Getting ahead of the curve on technology is a familiar business strategy for Verizon, noted Van L. Baker, research vice president for mobility at Gartner.
"Most people are saying it'll be 2020 before we really see 5G. Verizon is saying it's going to be 2017, 2018. That's not inconsistent with their past behavior," he told TechNewsWorld. "They've always been the first ones to roll out new technology."
Verizon may have motives for its announcement other than its desire to be a technology leader, noted Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.
"Verizon needs ways to differentiate itself from more aggressive wireless competitors," he told TechNewsWorld. "This is primarily a publicity stunt that will affect a modest number of markets and end users, at least in its infancy."

No Wow for Consumers

5G usage is likely to be low well beyond 2020. Active connections will reach 240 million -- or just 3 percent of all global mobile connections -- by 2024, Juniper Research has predicted. Still, Verizon is gung ho about getting the technology off the ground now.
"We've got to get moving," Verizon's Samburg said.
"We know where wireless is going with smart cities and smart grids and the Internet of Things. If we want to be ready for latency and capacity, we have to start now, and that's why we're pushing this," he explained.
"We need the ability to carry more data so we can watch more video and listen to more audio more efficiently and more effectively," observed Jeff Kagan, a telecom industry analyst.
"It's the same reason we went from 2G to 3G to 4G," he told TechNewsWorld.
With its higher data rates, longer battery life and reduced latency, 5G should result in an ideal environment for the proliferation of new connected service applications and devices -- but will the average user see any difference in service?
"People aren't going to say, 'Oh, this is faster.' It's about more efficient use of the frequencies that are available," Gartner's Baker said. "Consumers will get some slight improvements, but not dramatically so

HOUSTON: Social networking giant Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg has landed the top spot on Vanity Fair's annual New Establishment list which ranks movers and shakers across different industries.

Zuckerberg, 31, not only leads the pack, but also trumps a number of other Valley bigwigs including Uber CEO Travis Kalanick (No. 2), Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos (No. 3) and Apple's Tim Cook and Jony Ive (tied at No. 4).

Unsurprisingly, tech ruled this year.

"Zuckerberg stands out as something of an elder statesman. He is far and away the youngest person ever to grab the top spot on the New Establishment list. He has not only proved himself as a brilliant entrepreneur; he may well become one of the great long-haul corporate leaders of the past half-century...

"The $240 billion company he scratched out of his dorm room at Harvard is apparently just his first step toward world domination in the realm of social networking," said Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter in a statement.

Facebook is already the second most-trafficked website in the US and worldwide, but its CEO wants even more.

The social network introduced Instant Articles, an initiative that has Facebook hosting optimised content from publishers including the New York Times, NBC, BuzzFeed, BBC News and the Guardian.

And while Facebook already has 1.5 billion users, it is on a quest to bring the internet to emerging markets with Internet.org.

Idea says it's 'well placed' to compete in 4G segment 2015

MUMBAI: With its larger rivals either launching or lining up 4G offerings, Idea Cellular has said that it is "well-placed to compete" in the segment.

"Idea is well-placed to compete in the 4G space," MD Himanshu Kapania said at an investor conference organized by domestic brokerage Motilal Oswal Financial Services.

The comments came against the backdrop of Bharti Airtel recently launching its 4G service in select circles.

The 4G network is considered superior for data services, which as a segment is proving to be a money spinner for telecom players.

The Aditya Birla Group company is "competitively placed" to tap this opportunity presented by the data boom.

Idea Cellular has bagged 4G licences in 11 circles, including Maharashtra and Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Mumbai, Andhra, Karnataka, Kerala, the North-East, Gujarat and Haryana.

"Idea has transitioned from pure voice to voice and data and is transitioning to become a significant player in the internet space," Kapania was quoted as saying.

The second-largest telecom operator Vodafone has already announced its plan to launch 4G by the year-end in markets such as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Kochi. Reliance Jio too is expected to go for a national launch by December.

Kapania also said the company is upgrading up to 80% of its 2G sites to handle 3G services as well.

At present, 3G services cover 275 million people and may potentially expand to 750 million in a few years, with the expansion in 3G and launch of 4G services, he added.

Led by mobile services, the telephone user base in the country crossed the 100-crore mark in July.

Whatsapp Security Problem: Over 200 Million Users At Risk

These days, most of the official business dealings and conversations happen via Whatsapp and people trsut the software because of the high-end security provided by the application. Whatsapp web gained equal popularity as the mobile app and is mostly used by people who work in offices and are used to have conversations which are confidential at times.

Whatsapp Security Problem: Over 200 Million Users At Risk

Recently a software error was discovered in the Whatsapp web version which can allow the hackers to trick the users in downloading virus to their systems. iPhone users can also use the Whatsapp Web with a recent update and now with the Software vulnerability on the web version, around 200 Million users who make use of the web version are at complete risk.
The web version was first made available for Android users and then to Windows Phone and Blackberry since January 2015. Recently the software is made available for iPhone users as well. The process of logging in to the web version is very simple.
All ou have to do is open the web.whatsapp.com on your web browser and scan the QR code from your mobile. After the code is scanned by your smartphone, you can start using Whatsapp from the web version.
According to a recent study by CheckPoint, a security based organization, there is a case of vulnerability that the web version can allow hackers slip in and make innocent users download malware into their systems.
Whatsapp nearly has 900 million monthly users in which 200 million people also make use of the web version of the application. The hacker just needs the mobile phone number that’s associated with your account and by sending you a “vCard” contact card that contains a malicious code. Once you get the “vCard”, it will launch an executable file that will start downloading malware onto your computer.
As on August 27, 2015, the Whatsapp team have realized the issue and are working on providing security to the web version users of the application. According the CheckPoint, the problem can be solved by updating to the latest version of WhatsApp web version and the users can be out of the vulnerability.
